If you want the sound of water out back but don't want a pond eating your whole lawn, small garden pond installation in Boise is how I make that work. I build compact ponds that fit next to a patio, in a side yard or in a corner bed, and I build them to hold up to Idaho weather.
A small garden pond is a lined pond, often about the size of a large rug, with a little waterfall or bubbling stone, a few plants and maybe a handful of goldfish. I use Aquascape components and the ecosystem approach. That means rock, gravel, plants, a skimmer and a biological filter work together to keep the water clear without a shelf full of chemicals.
Who a small pond is right for
A small garden pond works well if:
- You have a townhome, a newer subdivision lot or a tight backyard
- You want water you can see from the kitchen window or the patio table
- You'd like a few fish and a water lily, not a koi collection
- You want something you can look after in a few minutes a week
If you want big koi, a small pond isn't the answer. Koi grow large and need more water and depth. My koi pond installation page covers that. If you have young kids and want no open water at all, a fountain may suit you better.
Small ponds and Boise summers
Here's the catch with going small. Less water heats up faster. In July and August, a shallow pond in full afternoon sun can get warm enough to grow algae fast and stress fish. Hot, dry air also pulls water out of a small pond quickly, so the level drops more than people expect.
I plan around that from the start:
- I place the pond where it gets some afternoon shade when I can
- I dig it deeper than it looks, so there's a cooler zone at the bottom
- I plan for plants to cover about half the surface once they fill in
- I add an autofill valve so the pond tops itself off from your water line
Plants do a lot of the work in a small garden pond. They shade the water and soak up the nutrients algae would eat. I handle aquatic plant installation as part of the build and pick plants that do well in our alkaline water.
Small ponds and Idaho winters
Freeze-thaw winters are the other half of the story. If fish are going to stay in the pond all winter, it has to be deep enough that it won't freeze solid. For goldfish in a small Boise pond, I aim for about 2 feet at the deepest point. I also leave room for a small de-icer or aerator to hold a hole open in the ice so gases can escape.
Depth helps with herons and raccoons too. Steep sides below the plant shelf and a fish cave at the bottom give fish a place to hide.
How I build a small garden pond
- Consultation. I walk your yard with you and look at sun, slope, trees and where you'll sit.
- Layout. I mark the shape with paint and check the view from your windows and patio.
- Digging. I dig the plant shelf and the deep zone, then level the edges so the water line looks even.
- Liner and plumbing. Underlayment, a fish-safe rubber liner, a skimmer, a pump and a small biofalls filter at the head of the waterfall.
- Rock and gravel. Stone hides the liner and gives good bacteria a place to live.
- Plants and water. I plant, fill, add water conditioner and start the system.
- Walkthrough. I show you how to empty the skimmer and what to do each season.
I'm on the job myself from the first meeting through the last rock.
What a small pond costs
My published starting price for an 8' x 11' Aquascape system pond with a waterfall is $15,500. Going smaller doesn't always save as much as people hope, because you still need a pump, skimmer, filter and liner no matter the size. What moves the price:
- How big and deep the pond is
- How far power and water lines have to run
- How much stone you want, and how big the boulders are
- Backyard access (a narrow side gate means more hand work)
- Add-ons like lighting or a patio edge
If a pond is more than you want to take on, Aquascape fountain kits start from $5,500 and give you moving water with no open pond. And if you already have a small pond that needs more life, a pond fountain installation adds spray and sound.
Fitting a pond into the rest of the yard
A small pond looks best when it belongs to something. I often tuck one beside a paver patio so the water is right where you sit, or set it into a planting bed with boulders and grasses around it. If you're planning a bigger yard project, I can design the pond in from the start. If you have more room than you thought, compare this with a full backyard pond installation, or see every option on my pond contractor page.
Where I build small garden ponds
I build in Boise first, plus Garden City, Eagle, Meridian, Star, Kuna, Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton and Hidden Springs, and up in Sun Valley and Ketchum.

Small garden pond installation questions
Very small ponds swing in temperature fast, which leads to algae in summer and freezing in winter. I'd rather build a pond a little bigger and deeper than squeeze in something that fights you. At the consultation I'll show you the smallest size that will stay clear in your spot.
Yes, a few goldfish do well in a small pond that's about 2 feet deep at the bottom. Koi need much more room and depth. I'll plan hiding spots so herons and raccoons have a harder time.
Most weeks it's emptying the skimmer net and checking the water level. In spring and fall there's a bit more work: cleaning the filter, trimming plants and getting it ready for winter. An autofill valve takes care of summer evaporation.
It can, as long as there's room to dig, a nearby outdoor outlet and a way to keep yard runoff out. Setting a pond next to a patio is one of my favorite layouts because you hear the water right where you sit. I'll check grade and drainage near the house first.
