Backyard pond installation in Boise often starts with a homeowner looking at a plain square of lawn and asking, "Would a pond even fit back here?" In most yards, the answer is yes. The better questions are where it should go, how big it should be, and how it will work with kids, dogs, sprinklers and the rest of your life.
I'm Kabe Hockema. I install backyard ponds with Aquascape components and the ecosystem approach. A skimmer, a biofalls filter, rocks and gravel, beneficial bacteria and aquatic plants work together to keep the water clear. I'm on site for every pond I build.
Is a pond right for your backyard?
A pond is a good fit if you want the sound of water, like watching fish and birds, and are willing to do a little care through the seasons. It may not be the right fit if you have toddlers and no way to watch the water, or if you want a feature you never have to think about. In those cases, a pondless waterfall or a fountain gives you moving water without an open pond. We'll talk about that honestly at the consultation.
Fitting a pond into a subdivision lot
Many yards in Meridian, Kuna, Star and newer parts of Boise and Eagle are small and flat, with a fence on three sides. A pond can still look natural there. Here's how I plan a backyard pond installation on a lot like that:
- Size to the space. A pond that's too big swallows a small yard. A smaller pond can still have a waterfall and fish. My page on small garden pond installation shows what's possible in tight spots.
- Build some height. On a flat lot, I use soil from the dig to build a gentle rise for the waterfall, so the pond doesn't look dropped into the lawn.
- Use the corner. A back corner pond with plants behind it can hide a fence line and make the yard feel deeper.
- Watch for builder fill. Newer lots often sit on compacted fill with soft spots. I pack the base well so the pond edge stays level.
Planning around your sprinklers
Most Treasure Valley yards have a sprinkler system, and many run on irrigation district water. Sprinkler lines often run right where a pond wants to go. I find and move lines and heads before the dig. I also aim heads so they don't spray lawn water and fertilizer into the pond, since that feeds algae.
Kids, dogs and the pond
Families ask me about this a lot. A few things help:
- Gentle gravel edges in some spots let a dog walk in and out instead of struggling at a steep wall.
- Placement in view of the kitchen window or patio, so you can see the water.
- Pondless options for families who want water with no open pool at all.
Dogs are usually fine around an ecosystem pond. The rocks and liner hold up to them better than you might think.
What install week looks like
For a standard backyard pond, plan on about a week of work once I start. Here's the rhythm:
- Day one: Mark the outline, move sprinklers, and start the dig.
- Next few days: Finish digging shelves, set the underlayment and liner, install the skimmer and biofalls, and run the plumbing.
- Then: Set the rocks and gravel, fill the pond, and test the waterfall.
- Last: Plant the pond and the area around it, then clean up. Lawn edges get patched where the machine came through.
Fish wait until the pond has settled. I'll tell you when it's ready.
Living with a backyard pond
An ecosystem pond doesn't take much work, but it does take some. Expect to empty the skimmer net, top off water in hot summer weeks, net out leaves in the fall, and keep a hole in the ice in winter if you have fish. A full clean-out every spring keeps the pond fresh. Many owners add lighting so they can enjoy the water after dark. My page on pond lighting installation covers that.
What drives the cost
My published starting price for an 8' x 11' Aquascape system pond with a waterfall is $15,500. Things that change it:
- Size and depth of the pond.
- Waterfall height and stream length.
- Access. A wide gate or alley access is faster than a narrow side yard.
- Sprinkler work and lawn repair around the pond.
- Extras like lighting, a patio or seating near the water.
Making it part of the whole yard
A pond looks best when it connects to where you sit. Many people pair a pond with a patio, a seating wall or a fire pit. See my outdoor living page for how those pieces come together. To understand the system behind the water, read about ecosystem pond installation, and find all my pond services on the pond contractor page.

Backyard pond installation questions
Less than most people think. My published starting price is for an 8' x 11' pond with a waterfall, which fits in many subdivision yards. Smaller ponds and pondless waterfalls work in even tighter spaces.
Any open water needs watching around small children. Placing the pond where you can see it helps. If you want moving water with no open pool, a pondless waterfall is a good choice.
Often, yes. Sprinkler lines and heads may need to be moved out of the dig area. I also aim nearby heads away from the pond so lawn water and fertilizer don't get in.
Expect to empty the skimmer net, top off water in summer, net leaves in fall, and keep a hole in the ice in winter if you have fish. A spring clean-out once a year keeps it in good shape.
