If you've seen too many ponds that look like a kidney-shaped hole with rocks lined up around the rim like a necklace, custom pond design in Boise is how you get one that looks like it was always there. It starts with your yard, not a catalog shape. I design the pond around where you sit, what you see from inside the house, how the land falls and what you want the water to do.
I design and build my own ponds. That matters, because the person drawing the pond knows exactly how it will get built, and the person building it knows why every rock is where it is. For the working parts, I use Aquascape components and the ecosystem approach.
It starts with how you'll use it
Every custom pond design starts with questions, long before I draw anything:
- Where will you watch the pond from? The patio, the kitchen window, a bench?
- Do you want the water loud enough to cover road noise, or soft?
- Fish, plants or both? Koi or goldfish?
- Will kids or pets be near the water?
- How much time do you want to spend on upkeep?
Your answers change everything. A koi pond needs depth and filtration first, and if fish are the main goal, my fish pond design page goes further. A pond built for sound needs a well-placed falls. A pond you'll mostly enjoy from indoors needs to face the window.
Reading the yard
Then I study the site:
- Sun. Some sun keeps water plants happy. Full afternoon sun in a Boise summer means more algae and more evaporation.
- Trees. Leaves and needles foul a pond. I keep ponds out from under big trees when I can.
- Slope. A natural slope is a gift for a waterfall. On a flat lot, I build a berm from the soil that comes out of the pond.
- Utilities and drainage. Buried lines get marked through 811 before any digging. I also make sure yard runoff and lawn fertilizer won't drain into the pond.
- Wind. Open lots catch a lot of wind, which blows debris in and spray around.
Shape, size and depth
Natural ponds have uneven edges, not perfect curves. I draw shapes with a few coves and points so the pond looks different from each angle. Size is about scale. A pond should feel right next to your house and patio, not lost in the yard or crammed into a corner.
Depth is where Idaho comes in. If fish will stay through winter, the deep zone has to sit well below the ice. I plan plant shelves at a few depths, and steep walls near the deep zone so herons can't wade in to fish.
Where the waterfall goes
The waterfall is usually the focal point, so it should face where you sit. I put the biological filter at its head and the skimmer across the pond from it, so water sweeps the whole pond instead of taking a shortcut. Height, width and the number of drops all change the sound. My waterfall installation page walks through those choices.
Tying the pond to the rest of the yard
A pond rarely stands alone. I design how it meets the patio, the path, the planting beds and the boulders. Stone around the pond can match a nearby wall or steps. Lights under the water or on the falls turn the pond into an evening feature too, which I handle with pond lighting installation. If you're redoing the whole yard, the pond can be one part of a full set of landscape plans.
From drawing to dirt
Once you approve the design, I paint the outline on the ground so you can stand where the pond will be and see it from every side. Small changes are easy at this point. Then pond excavation begins, followed by liner, plumbing, stone, plants and water. I'm there for all of it, from the first sketch to the day the pump starts.
What sets the price
With custom pond design, the design itself drives the cost: size, depth, waterfall height, how much stone and how big, plants, lighting and site access. My published starting price for an 8' x 11' Aquascape system pond with a waterfall is $15,500. Bigger ponds, taller falls and more boulders add to that. You can see my other pond services on the pond contractor page.
Designing ponds from Boise to Ketchum
I design and build ponds in Boise, Eagle, Meridian, Star, Kuna, Garden City, Hidden Springs, Nampa, Caldwell and Middleton, plus Sun Valley and Ketchum, where the higher elevation means colder winters and a deeper pond for fish.

Custom pond design questions
Every pond I build gets designed first, even if it's a simple sketch and a painted outline on the ground. The design decides where the waterfall faces, how deep the fish zone goes and how the pond meets your patio. It's much easier to change a drawing than a hole.
Yes, most of my pond designs fit into a yard that's already in place. I work around existing patios, trees and irrigation and plan how the pond edge meets each of them. If you're also changing other parts of the yard, I can plan those together.
Uneven shapes with a few coves and points look the most natural. Perfect circles and kidney shapes tend to look placed. I also vary the size of the edge stones, which makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
It depends on what lives in it. A plant-only pond can be shallower, goldfish need about 2 feet to winter safely, and koi need at least 3 feet. I plan the depth around your goals and our freeze-thaw winters.
