Pond leak repair in Boise usually starts with a call like this: "I'm filling my pond every other day, and I can't tell where the water's going." Before anyone cuts into a liner or tears out rock, someone has to find the leak. That's most of the job, and it's the part I take the most care with, because guessing gets expensive.
I've been doing landscape and water work in the Treasure Valley since 2012. When you hire me to find a leak, I'm the one out there doing it. This page covers how to tell a leak from normal water loss, where leaks usually hide, and how I narrow them down. My pond contractor page lists the rest of my pond services.
Is it a leak or just a Boise summer?
Every pond loses some water. On hot, windy July days, evaporation and splash from a waterfall can pull the level down fast, and that's normal in our dry air.
A simple bucket test tells you which you have. Set a bucket on a shelf inside the pond and fill it so the water inside matches the pond level. Mark both levels. Leave the pump running as usual. After 24 hours, compare. If the pond dropped a lot more than the bucket, you have a leak. If they dropped about the same, it's evaporation, and an autofill valve may be all you need.
Where pond leaks usually hide
Most pond leaks aren't a hole in the liner. Here's where I look, roughly in the order I find them:
- Low spots on the edge. Soil settles and freeze-thaw winters move rocks. One section of edge sinks below the water line and water seeps into the soil.
- The waterfall and stream. Splash lands outside the liner, or a shifted rock sends flow sideways. A stream clogged with leaves can back up and spill over its banks.
- The skimmer and biofalls filter. The seams where the liner meets the skimmer faceplate or the filter can work loose.
- Plumbing. A cracked fitting or loose clamp on the pipe from the pump to the waterfall leaks underground, out of sight.
- Wicking. Soil, mulch or plant roots touching the liner edge pull water out like a paper towel.
- True holes. Punctures from roots, rodents or a sharp rock do happen, but less often than the rest.
How I track down a leak
Walk the edges
With the pump running, I walk the whole pond and stream looking for wet soil, soggy mulch, or grass that's greener than the rest. A lot of leaks show up right there.
Shut the pump off
If the edges look dry, I turn the pump off and watch the level for a day or so. If the water stops dropping, the leak is in the waterfall, the stream or the plumbing. If it keeps dropping, the leak is in the pond itself.
Let the pond find its level
A pond with a leak in the basin drains down to the leak and then stops. The level where it stops tells me which band of liner to check. I pull back rock along that line and look closely. A little pond-safe dye near a suspect spot shows where the water is being drawn out.
Check the pipes
For leaks on the waterfall side, I check each fitting and section of pipe one at a time until the loss stops.
Fixing it once it's found
Edge leaks are usually simple. I build the low spot back up with soil and rock and pull the liner up so it sits above the water line again. Waterfall leaks often mean resetting stones, adding waterfall foam behind the spill stones so water flows over them instead of behind them, and tucking the liner edges back up. Plumbing leaks get new fittings. A true hole in a rubber liner gets cleaned and covered with a patch made for that liner.
If the liner is brittle or full of holes, patching isn't worth it. That's a job for pond liner replacement, and I'll tell you so plainly.
Leaks built into the design
Some ponds leak because of how they were built: liner edges that end right at water level, a stream with no raised edge, or a skimmer set too low. If the same leak keeps coming back, I'll explain why and what a lasting fix looks like. Bigger structural problems fall under pond repair. After the fix, regular pond maintenance catches settling edges before they turn into the next leak. The same process works on fountains and other water features.
What drives the cost
With pond leak repair, finding the leak is often a bigger share of the cost than fixing it. The time it takes depends on the size of the pond and stream, how much rock has to move to see the liner, and whether the leak is in buried pipe. Then comes the repair itself, which can be as small as resetting a few stones or as big as rebuilding a stream. I'll give you a clear plan and price once I've found the problem.
Where I do pond leak repair
I find and fix pond leaks in Boise, Eagle, Meridian, Garden City, Star, Kuna, Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton and Hidden Springs, plus Sun Valley and Ketchum. I take on a limited number of jobs each season, so you'll deal with me directly from the first visit to the last.
If your pond keeps dropping and you're tired of dragging the hose out, schedule a consultation for pond leak repair in Boise. Run the bucket test first if you can, and tell me what you found.

Pond leak repair questions
It depends on the pond's size, how much sun and wind it gets, and how much the waterfall splashes. In a Boise summer, a pond with a waterfall can lose a noticeable amount in a few days just to evaporation. The bucket test is the easiest way to tell normal loss from a leak.
Usually, yes. Most leaks are at the edges or in the waterfall, and the pond only drops to the level of the leak. If the water gets too low for the fish, I move them to an aerated holding tank until the fix is done.
Yes. A pump that runs dry can burn out, and fish need the water. Use a water conditioner when you add tap water, since our city water contains chlorine or chloramine that harms fish.
Not usually. Most leaks come from low edges, the waterfall, or plumbing, and those are fixed without touching the main liner. A new liner only makes sense when the old one is brittle, cracked or has many holes.
Yes. A lot of the leaks I chase are in older ponds built by someone else. I'll find the cause and tell you whether it's a quick fix or a sign of a bigger problem.
