Architectural water features in Boise suit houses with clean lines, big windows and a simple color palette, where a mossy boulder fountain would look out of place. They use water shaped by straight edges, smooth surfaces and careful geometry, so it reads as part of the architecture instead of a piece of nature set in the yard.

I'm Kabe Hockema, owner of Hockema Landscape Design & Build. I've been designing and building landscapes since 2012, and I'm on every job myself. Under the surface, these features use Aquascape components: a buried basin, a pump and tubing. On top, the design is all about form. For all of my fountain work, see the fountain contractor page. For ponds and waterfalls, see my outdoor water features page.

What makes a water feature architectural

An architectural water feature follows the lines of the house and the hardscape. It tends to have:

  • Straight edges, clean geometry and only a few materials.
  • Water that moves in a controlled way: a smooth sheet, a steady bubble or a thin spill.
  • A clear tie to a wall, a step, a patio edge or an entry.

The goal is calm, not wild. You notice the water and the form together.

Styles that suit modern homes

Basalt columns

Six-sided columns of volcanic stone, cut flat on top and drilled so water wells up and runs down the faces. Set in a row or a tight group at different heights, they look sculptural. Solid basalt also handles our freezes well.

Spillways and water walls

A spillway sends a thin sheet of water off a straight lip into the basin below. A water wall runs water down a flat face. Both work well built into a seat wall, a raised planter or a step.

Formal urns and bowls

A smooth vessel in a simple shape and a dark or neutral glaze, with water rising and sheeting over the edge. One urn can anchor an entry. A matching pair can frame a walkway.

Why level and precision matter more

A natural boulder fountain hides small errors. An architectural one shows them. If a spillway lip is off by a hair, the sheet of water pulls to one side and breaks up. If a row of columns isn't lined up, you see it from every angle. I set these pieces with a level and take the time to shim and adjust until the water runs evenly across the whole edge.

Wind, hard water and freezing on smooth surfaces

Wind. A thin sheet of water looks great on a still day. In our afternoon wind, it can break up and blow sideways, and the basin drains faster. For exposed spots I use a shorter drop, a heavier flow, or a design that shrugs off wind better, like a bubbling column.

Hard water. Treasure Valley water leaves white mineral spots, and dark, smooth surfaces show them most. A regular wipe with a scale cleaner keeps them sharp. I'll walk you through finish choices that show less.

Freezing. Any vessel, spillway trough or line that holds water has to drain before a hard freeze. I design each feature so it empties and the pump comes out easily.

Building it into walls, steps and patios

Architectural water features look best when they're part of the hardscape, not set beside it. A spillway in a seat wall or a column set into a patio corner gets planned with the stonework, so the conduit, tubing and basin are in place before the wall or pavers go up. This often happens as part of a larger outdoor living project with a patio, fire feature and lighting. For a fountain beside a patio, see patio fountain installation. For one-off pieces in any style, see custom fountain design.

Light it for the evening

Clean shapes and moving water look great lit at night. A small light aimed up a column or tucked under a spillway lip turns the feature into something to look at after dark. It's easiest to plan the wiring during the build.

What drives the cost

Aquascape fountain kits start at $5,500. That's about where a single column or urn begins. Architectural features usually cost more because of:

  • Custom stonework, like a wall or step with a built-in spillway.
  • The size and number of columns or vessels.
  • The time it takes to set and level each piece precisely.
  • Lighting and the hardscape around it.

Where I build

I build architectural water features in Boise, including Harris Ranch and the North End, and across Eagle, Meridian, Star, Garden City, Kuna, Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton and Hidden Springs. I also work in Sun Valley and Ketchum.

Architectural water features questions

An architectural water feature is a fountain or spillway designed around clean lines and the shapes of the house. A natural fountain, like a drilled boulder, is meant to look like it came from nature. Both can use the same buried basin and pump.

It can, if the spot is sheltered or the design suits it. Thin sheets of water blow apart in strong wind. In open spots I use a shorter drop or a bubbling column instead.

Wipe the surface now and then with a scale cleaner, and keep the water topped off so minerals don't build up as fast. Textured or lighter finishes hide spots better than glossy dark ones.

Yes. It's best planned before the wall is built, so the basin, tubing and power can go in with it. Adding one to an existing wall is harder and depends on how the wall was built.

I recommend shutting it down before hard freezes. Ice can build up on smooth edges and send water out of the basin, and any vessel left full can crack.
