For this Boise, Idaho home, the homeowner wanted his backyard to feel like the mountains. He's a hunter, and the goal was simple: step out the back door and feel like he'd hiked into camp.

Hockema Landscape Design & Build built a large pondless waterfall under the mature pine trees at the back of the property. Water spills down a series of boulder steps and disappears into a river rock basin, so the yard gets the sound and movement of a mountain stream without an open pond to maintain. A stepping-stone path leads from the lawn to a small round paver patio, where a boulder-ringed fire pit with a log set looks like a campfire.

The Process

The waterfall was set into the rise under the pines, so the trees frame it as if it had always been there. Large boulders form each drop, and river rock fills the base where the water disappears into the reservoir below. Dark gravel ties the waterfall, the patio and the path together, and ornamental grasses and a sculpted pine soften the edges. The project was completed in the fall of 2026.

The finished backyard is a mountain retreat in Boise: falling water under the pines, a campfire on the patio, and all of it a short walk from the back door.

Why a pondless waterfall

A pondless waterfall recirculates water from a reservoir hidden under rock and gravel, so there's no open pond at the bottom. You get the sound of a waterfall without standing water, fish care or pond cleanouts, and the system is simple to shut down for a Boise winter. For a backyard meant to feel like a mountain stream, a pondless waterfall delivers the look and the sound with far less upkeep than a pond. Pondless waterfalls start at $9,500.

Building a waterfall under mature pines

The mature pines are what made this yard feel like the mountains, so the waterfall was built to work with them. Building near big trees takes care around their roots, and a waterfall under pines has to handle a steady drop of needles. Boulders, river rock and gravel hide needles far better than lawn does, and with no pond at the bottom, there's no open water for them to collect in.

A campfire you can sit around

The fire pit is built to look like a backcountry campfire: a ring of boulders around a log set, on a round paver patio sized for a pair of chairs. It sits right beside the waterfall, so the sound of the water carries to the fire. Large stepping stones set in the gravel lead out from the lawn and keep the walk to the patio as simple as a trail.

Pondless waterfalls and water features in Boise

A pondless waterfall is one of the most popular water features in the Treasure Valley, and it fits yards where a full pond doesn't. See the water features Hockema builds in Boise and across Ada and Canyon counties, or schedule a consultation to talk about a waterfall for your yard.
