Caldwell Outdoor Living Room

For this Caldwell, Idaho home, the homeowners wanted a backyard that worked like an outdoor living room. A place to settle in and watch the sunrise every morning.

Hockema Landscape Design & Build laid the space out around that view. A paver patio opens onto a short stone wall that frames the lawn, with a stone outdoor fireplace and a round fire pit set so the seating faces the morning light. An Aquascape fountain of two spilling bowls sits just off the walk, close enough to hear from the chairs.

The Process

The patio was built to feel furnished, not simply paved. Seating groups around the fireplace and the fire pit, the fountain anchors the approach, and the lawn stays open so the sunrise remains the view. Stone, pavers, and the water feature were finished together so the whole yard reads as one room.

The finished space is a private outdoor living room in Caldwell made for slow mornings, evening fires, and the sound of water just off the patio.

Designing around the sunrise

When the view is the reason for the yard, orientation drives every decision. In a space built for the sunrise, the main seating faces east, nothing tall sits between the chairs and the horizon, and the open lawn keeps the sightline clear. Caldwell's open views and wide skies make that kind of design possible, and the rest of the layout followed from it.

A fireplace and a fire pit

An outdoor fireplace and a fire pit do different jobs. A fireplace is a vertical focal point that anchors one side of the room and throws warmth toward the seating in front of it. A round fire pit is a gathering spot, with chairs all the way around for conversation. Having both lets the space work for a quiet morning with coffee or a group around the fire in the evening. Water you can hear from the chairs

A spilling bowl fountain recirculates water from a hidden basin below, so there's no open pond to maintain. Pavers and a short stone wall

The patio is the floor of the room, built on a compacted base that keeps it flat through Canyon County freeze-thaw cycles.
