How to Design a Backyard Entertaining Space in the Treasure Valley
A backyard that's good for entertaining doesn't happen by accident. It requires thinking about how people move through a space, where they congregate, how the space looks at night, and how it functions from early spring through late fall.
A backyard that's good for entertaining doesn't happen by accident. It requires thinking about how people move through a space, where they congregate, how the space looks at night, and how it functions from early spring through late fall in Boise's climate. Too many outdoor spaces in the Treasure Valley are designed around a single moment, 'the patio', rather than as a complete outdoor living environment.
Start With How You Actually Use the Space
Before any design work, I ask clients two things: who comes over, and what do you do when they're there? Casual family dinners look different from cocktail parties. Households with young children need different features than empty-nesters who host wine tastings. Getting that picture right before designing means the finished space serves how you actually live.
Define Zones
Good outdoor entertaining spaces have distinct zones, even in modest-sized yards. A cooking zone (the grill, the kitchen, the workspace) separate from the dining zone (table, chairs, enough space to circulate). A lounge or fire zone for after-dinner gathering. Possibly a landscape buffer or screening between the entertaining area and adjacent property. These zones don't need to be large; they need to be thoughtfully sized for their purpose and connected by clear pathways.
Patio Size: Bigger Than You Think
A dining table for six needs roughly 12x12 feet just for the table and chairs. Add circulation space and you're at 14x16 minimum for a functional dining zone alone. A separate seating area around a fire feature needs another 12x12 to 14x14. Homeowners almost always underestimate how much space outdoor furniture actually occupies at scale. Size patios based on the furniture you plan to use, with comfortable circulation on all sides.

An outdoor kitchen is often the highest-return addition to a Boise entertaining space. Our outdoor kitchen planning guide covers infrastructure, appliance selection, and countertop materials for Boise's climate.
Think About the Season
Boise's climate supports outdoor entertaining from roughly April through October, about seven months, with the shoulder seasons being some of the most enjoyable times to be outside if the space is designed for them. A pergola, shade structure, or overhead covering extends usability by providing shade in the heat of July and August and shelter from early fall rains. A fire feature extends evening use into October and November.
For fire features specifically, our comparison of fire pits vs. outdoor fireplaces helps you decide which style fits your entertaining pattern and space.
Lighting
Outdoor entertaining extends into the evening in summer and spring, and a space that lacks good lighting stops being used after dark. Path lighting guides guests safely through the space. Uplighting in trees and overhead structures creates atmosphere. Task lighting over the grill and kitchen area makes cooking at night functional. I design lighting as part of every outdoor living project rather than as an add-on.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I budget for a full backyard outdoor living space?
A complete backyard entertaining space with patio, fire feature, outdoor kitchen, lighting, and surrounding planting in the Treasure Valley typically runs $40,000 to $100,000+ depending on scope, materials, and site conditions. Phasing the project over multiple seasons is a practical approach if budget doesn't support doing everything at once.
